Welcome to Lekki — one of the most exciting, fastest-growing, and most liveable neighbourhoods in Lagos. Whether you are relocating from another part of Nigeria, moving back from abroad, or arriving in Lagos for the first time, this guide covers everything you need to know about living in Lekki.
Why Lekki?
Lekki has transformed from a quiet peninsula into Lagos’ most desirable residential and commercial area. It offers a rare combination of modern infrastructure, a vibrant social scene, relative security, and a community feel that is hard to find elsewhere in Lagos. For professionals, families, expats, and entrepreneurs, Lekki has become the neighbourhood of choice.
The Different Areas of Lekki
Lekki Phase 1 The most established part of Lekki. Close to Victoria Island, well-serviced with restaurants, supermarkets, banks, and businesses. The most sought-after and most expensive area to rent or buy.
Ikate / Elegushi A rapidly developing area between Lekki Phase 1 and Chevron. Home to a growing number of restaurants, bars, and entertainment spots. Slightly more affordable than Phase 1.
Chevron / Lekki Phase 2 Further along the expressway, Chevron offers more space and newer developments. Popular with young professionals and families looking for more value for money.
Osapa London One of the most well-planned estates in Lekki. Quiet, residential, with good security. Extremely popular with families.
VGC (Victoria Garden City) A fully gated community with its own infrastructure. One of the most secure and serene residential areas in Lagos.
Getting Around Lekki
Traffic is the biggest challenge of Lekki life. The Lekki-Epe Expressway is the main artery and can be heavily congested during peak hours.
Tips for beating Lekki traffic:
- Leave before 7am or after 9am for morning commutes
- Use Bolt or Uber for shorter trips within Lekki
- The BRT bus service on the expressway is reliable and affordable
- Work from home or a cafe on Fridays when traffic is worst
Essential Services in Lekki
- Supermarkets: Shoprite (The Palms), Spar (Lekki), Ebeano, Addide
- Hospitals: Reddington Hospital, Lagoon Hospital, Doyen Medical Centre
- Banks: All major Nigerian banks have branches on Admiralty Way
- Schools: American International School, Greensprings, Chrisland, Lead British International School
- Gyms: Upbeat Recreation Centre, various private gyms on the expressway
The Lekki Lifestyle
Life in Lekki is social, active, and cosmopolitan. Weekends are busy — beach trips to Elegushi, brunch at Circa or PAUSE Cafe, evening drinks at rooftop bars, family days at Lekki Conservation Centre or Lufasi Nature Park.
The community is diverse — Nigerians returning from abroad, Lagos professionals, expatriates, and entrepreneurs all call Lekki home. It has a distinctly different energy from the rest of Lagos — more relaxed, more international, but still unmistakably Lagos.
Is Lekki Safe?
Lekki is one of the safer parts of Lagos. Most residential estates have 24-hour security, CCTV, and controlled access. The area is well-lit and active at all hours. As with anywhere in Lagos, basic security awareness is important — avoid displaying valuables unnecessarily and be mindful of your surroundings at night.
Living in Lekki Verdict
Lekki is the best place to live in Lagos right now. It is not perfect — traffic can be brutal and costs are high — but the lifestyle, infrastructure, and community more than compensate. If you are considering a move to Lagos, make Lekki your first choice.
